There are so many different and creative ways to make use of your skills and talents to make money; in this week’s Meet The Money Maker, Megan from Hazel & Lace shares how she makes six figures by using her photography skills.

Making money as a wedding photographer

Tell us a little bit about yourself

“I travel full time all over Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, Arizona, and California. My husband and I live in a camper with our three dogs and three cats. We both our left our previous careers and are now self-employed nomads. I was an emergency veterinarian for many years before my current adventure. Now I am a wedding and elopement photographer.”

What’s your money maker and what does it involve?

“My “money maker” is wedding photography. We travel from wedding to wedding, all over the southwest.

Obviously you need to be proficient at photographing a wedding and editing and delivering the photos.

But more than that, I spend a lot of time location scouting, emailing my couples and potential clients, blogging, perfecting my SEO, utilizing Pinterest, having an active social media presence, pursuing continuing education, networking with wedding vendors, planning styled shoots, adding great props such as using creative wedding hashtags for modern and trendy wedding setup, etc.

“It’s a lot of work, but I’m so passionate about it that it doesn’t feel like a job.”

How long have you been doing it & why did you start?

“I started my business in 2014 and re-branded in 2016 when we moved to Colorado. I have always loved photography, but it wasn’t until I got engaged and started looking for wedding photographers for my own wedding that I became obsessed with it.

It was something that I just naturally pursued while still working full time as a veterinarian. I finally quit my vet job during the summer of 2018, and it’s the best thing I’ve ever done.”

How much money is it possible to make?

“The cool thing about being your own boss is that your potential income has no limits. Right now I make six figures, and I know some photographers that make millions from selling workshops and online education resources. With the right business sense, the sky is the limit.”

What’s your favourite thing about it?

“I love being creative and exploring new places. Being out in nature all the time has definitely healed my soul. But the best part has been meeting my couples. I love hearing their vows, meeting their families, and going on adventures with them.

I feel like I’ve learned something new about life from every wedding I’ve photographed.”

What’s been the biggest challenge?

“With any business, I think you need to be intrinsically motivated to succeed. You have to really love what you’re doing and really get pumped up and excited when doing. It needs to give you energy.

I’ve thought about other ways to make money, but none of them get me as energized as photography. If you can find the thing that gets you excited, then nothing will stop you from succeeding.”

Is there any advice you’d give to someone wanting to try it?

“Photography is a huge investment in time, learning, and equipment. It’s absolutely possible to put in the work and succeed, but you’re gonna need help.

Going to workshops was the best thing I ever did for my business. It helped me grow by leaps and bounds.”
