Your child’s school will be their second home for the next 6 or 7 years and will be responsible for much of their development. Needless to say, this is an important decision that requires a lot of consideration. We have teamed up with a girls prep school in Surrey to share some top tips for choosing a school for your child.

Research and Compare OFSTED Reports

OFSTED reports can give you objective information about a school such as their past performance where the quality of their teaching, welfare and attainment is concerned. These observations are usually very detailed and can give access to much more specific information such as how they cater to disadvantaged and SEND students.

Attend Open Days with Your Child

What’s more important than your peace of mind is your child’s. After all, this is the environment where they’ll be spending much of their time. An open day can help them to get a feel of what their new school will be like and if they’ll like it there. It will give you a chance to speak with the teachers themselves and allow your child to get to know them too.

Consider Transportation

Looking into the local area is just as important. It can tell you about any transport issues that you might have before selecting a school for your child. This could be parking, a lack of public transport connections or busy roads to be aware of.

Look at The Focus of The School

As you do your research, you’ll learn that schools have different focuses. Some make learning an additional language a priority while others utilise different forms of teaching like outdoor learning opportunities and Montessori teaching. Consider the pros and cons of each as well as the skills that you would like your child to build.
