When we’re away from home and stuck in a hotel room, for whatever reason it can feel a little lonely. For those who travel frequently on business that’s especially the case, but even on a solo adventure the solitude of a room of an evening can be troubling on our mental health.
Sometimes that can be incredibly detrimental to our health too, with people often turning to the likes of alcohol. It’s a tale as old as time and for the millions of people who suffer from alcohol addiction or have gone through an alcohol detox, turning to the bottle can be really damaging.
A big part of that problem is that most hotel rooms are quite bland, with white walls and very little comfort to them. Often, just making a few changes to add a little comfort to your room can make all the difference. But how do you do that and make your room a space you actually want to relax in? Well, here are five steps to doing so…
Add soft furnishings
One of the easiest ways to create a cosy atmosphere in your hotel room is to add soft furnishings. Bring along a few cushions, a throw or two, and a plush rug. These items will not only add warmth to the space but also make it feel more homely. Naturally, that is quite a lot to take, but even a favourite cushion can make all the difference.
Dim the lights
Bright overhead lights can make a room feel harsh and clinical. To create a cosy ambiance, switch off the main light and instead use bedside lamps or wall sconces. Alternatively, use a dimmer switch if the hotel room has one. Soft lighting will create a relaxing atmosphere and make you feel more at ease.
Add some greenery
Plants are a great way to add a touch of nature to your hotel room. They not only look beautiful but also help to purify the air. If you don’t have a green thumb, choose low-maintenance plants such as succulents, snake plants or peace lilies. Alternatively, opt for a vase of fresh flowers to add some colour and fragrance to your room. Again, it may feel like this is a bit much, but the effect they can have make it worthwhile.
Personalise the space
One of the best ways to make a hotel room feel cosy is to personalise it with your belongings. Hang up some of your favourite photographs or artwork on the walls, place a scented candle on the bedside table or add a few books to the bedside table. These small touches will make you feel more at home and help you to relax.
Create a comforting scent
Finally, adding a comforting scent to your hotel room can make a huge difference. Pack a small bottle of your favourite essential oil or a scented room spray to create a calming aroma. Lavender, chamomile and vanilla are all great choices for creating a soothing atmosphere.
