Your children are so precious and important, and they deserve the effort and attention of a fully rounded parent, and, where possible, both parents. As Dad, your position is pivotal in the lives of your kids, and you have to do as much as you can to do what’s right for your children. There are a lot of things you can do if you want to achieve this, and it is all about your approach to parenthood.
It would be easy to phone it in with parenting and to only do half a job. Indeed, many parents actually do this, and it might be easier on you at the time, but it’s the kids who will suffer in the long run. So it is important to make sure you work on your parenting skills and do what you can to be the best possible parent. Here are some hints to help you get that Dad of the Year Award in the mail!
Fight for Your Rights
Too many fathers out there are happy to take the easy route, defer custody to the mother, and only see their kids once in a blue moon when it suits them. This is not going to result in happy and well-rounded children, so you need to make sure you know your father’s rights. Fight for your kids, and make sure you are getting the access to them that you deserve. They will thank you in the long run as it is what is best for their future.
Sometimes it Pays to be Pushy
Look, nobody is saying that overbearing parents are the best, and actually this approach can sometimes do more harm than good. But, you do need to be a little pushy with your kids sometimes. The best Dads are those who nurture, encourage and push their kids’ boundaries, helping them to excel at things and discover their talents. Remember that you are not meant to live your dreams through your children, but you do have to encourage them to embrace their talents, and this sometimes involves being a little pushy.
Give Them Space
As your children grow and evolve into individuals, they are all going to have different tastes and interests. As much as you need to be an attentive and nurturing Dad, you also need to know the right approach to being a parent in the modern world. And this means that you need to give your child their space sometimes. Let them come to you themselves if they have issues they want to discuss, but learn when they need their own space. This is a trial and error kind of deal, and one that you need to make sure you start trialling right now.
These are a selection of some of the most important hints you can use to help you be the best possible Dad. The fact is there is no rulebook for parenting and no right or wrong way to be a Dad, but there are some things that can lead to a better future. You have to find your own parenting style as well as making sure you are doing what is best for the kids.
